Comparison in Pole Dance

Comparison has a way of sneaking into every pole dancer’s journey. Whether it’s scrolling through social media or watching someone effortlessly nail the trick you’ve been working on for months, it’s easy to wonder why your progress doesn’t look the same. But what we often forget is that we’re comparing our everyday reality to someone else’s highlight reel. Behind every perfectly pointed toe and flawless combo are countless failed attempts, conditioning sessions, bruises, and moments of frustration that rarely make it onto Instagram.

The truth is that no two pole journeys are alike. Some dancers come from gymnastics, dance, or aerial backgrounds, while others are building strength from scratch. Some train five days a week, while others squeeze in one class between work and family responsibilities. Progress is influenced by so many factors—strength, flexibility, recovery, consistency, and even confidence. Instead of asking, “Why am I not where they are?” try asking, “What can I learn from them?” Comparison can become a source of inspiration when it motivates growth instead of feeding self-doubt.

At the end of the day, the only meaningful comparison is with the person you were yesterday. Celebrate the little victories: a cleaner climb, a stronger invert, holding a spin a little longer, or simply showing up on days when motivation is low. Pole isn’t a race to the hardest trick—it’s a practice of building strength, confidence, creativity, and resilience over time. Your journey doesn’t need to look like anyone else’s to be worth celebrating.
